About Indonesia

Indonesia consists of 18,108 islands, 6,000 of which are inhabited. The most important islands of Indonesia are Java, Bali, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. The capital of Indonesia (Jakarta) is located in Java.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world has about 300 ethnic groups. According to the 2010 national census, the population of Indonesia is 237.6 million. A Half of the population lives in Java. Administratively, Indonesia consists of 34 provinces, 5 of which have special status. Each province has its own legislature and governor. The provinces are subdivided into regencies and cities.

Most people in Indonesia follow Islam, although formally it is not an Islamic country. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population on Earth. Other religions include Christianity (Protestant, and Roman Catholic), Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Indonesia has world's second highest level of biodiversity (after Brazil), and its flora and fauna is a mixture of Asian and Australasian species. Forests cover approximately 60% of the country.
